problems with rpm

Hi,

I am new with linux. I have problems with rpm packages. I am never able to open them. I don't know what is the problem. I have Mandrake 9.1. This is what I do as it says in the README:

$ rpm -Uvh compat-glibc-7.2-2.1.3.3mdk.i586.rpm

And these are the errors I get:

error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Thx

su

Like david_ross says you can install rpm packages as root or you can install them as user after using the su command to get root privilages. Enter the su command. Enter your root password and then try rpm again.
