please help! error in dmesg output

Hi All,
I'm a in linux and i'm having some problem after installing slackware 9.1. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could offer me some help. Thanks in advance

I did a fresh installation of slackware 9.1, loaded the bare.i kernel version 2.4.22. Once i completed my installation, i run #dmesg and i get some error messages:

"usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed dev2.... ret = -6"

I currently have 2 USB port sharing IRQ 5. An alcatel usb modem was attached to one of the ports and the other was left vacant.

Could this problem be due to the hotplug thingy? Coz when i disable hotplug the error messages seems to go away. However, the system fails to detect the USB modem as well.

All advice are welcome thanks folks....

mickey

hmmm....That bare kernel might be your problem, whenever I install slack I just use the default kernel that it boots for the install. It's bulkier, but pretty much covers all the bases to get your harware working.

thanks alot for your reply..
actual i installed the bareapci.i kernel, so you suggest that i shld used the bzImage instead?
but i seems to me that the kernel was trying to probe for the usb device on my empty usb port... could that be a possible cause of error?
