i will be doing anything on my computer and sometimes the screen will flicker blank then back to normal. when i does it , it will make the usual monitor flicker noise for a crt. but the last time it was a ZAP and instead of it going blank it went like the top and bottom got comressed in and same w/ the sides, on the left side there was a thin red line. when it did this well i nearly pissed on myself. i have a Gateway Vivitron 1572 ( bout 7 years of age) and have it set to 1024x10xx and 60htz. i dont even know if the monitor was made to handle that high of settings. i have not midified mandrake at all, just only installed Bit defender antivirus and the software that came w/ mandrake. could my monitor be about to hit the dust / explode (lol) or is somethign wrong with a setting. my monitor has always showed up as Unknown monitor.
Sounds like a loose solder joint, or static building up in the monitor and then discharging. Your monitor is probably going to let the genie out soon ...
You should also make sure your monitor suports the resolution and especially the refresh rate its being run at. Did it just start doing this after a resolution change or something?
well sonce i got it off of a computer that ran windows 3.1 w/ a 33mhz cpu. i think that is bout to hit the dust. also i THINK that 3.1 would only run at 648x840 and low refresh rate. all i did was just see how far i could get it to go. i can set it to any resoultion except 1600x1200 and higher. but i highy doubt that it would support this high of a res. is there a log i could look at the would show that x.org had any techinal problem?
i have looked around on the internet to see if there is ANY info on the monitor and came up with nothing!
FYI: this monitor is so old that there is no degouse button. just a reset button that just throws the settings out of wack.

well i dont know how much longer it has. gateway support was as useful as a bag of rocks. they told my to reseat your video card so i told them, do you want to come reseat my integrated Gforce4 mx400 back into my mobo. they didnt respond back. they also wanted a serial number though they told me that it was off of the back of the computer and i told them . IM HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE MONITOR and would never buy a piece of crap manufactured computer.i build mine, not buy. i got the monitor from a neighbors trash and took a few other things after asking so i wouldnt get introuble w/ the "fuzz".
i was thinking ...... i have a 14" tv in my room and a video you put on my computer. i think u get my drift. a tv instead of a monitor.b/c crt's are sooooooooo freaking expensive and could only find already used ones for $80 range.... i will wait for lcd to drop.........

I could just be a bad or loose connection with the monitor's cable. Power down the system, then disconnect and reconnect the monitor cable to the video port. That being said though, as BajaNick indicated, if you've recently changed your video settings and you are forcing the monitor to use a higher resolution than it's rated for, you may have done damage to it.
On the other hand it may just be a matter of age, and that your monitor has hit the end of the line. Sorry I can't be more help -- J.W.
