Odd Chars w/ make/C++ compile error on Fedora w/bash shell

When I have errors after running make (c++ compile), there are odd characters next to some of the words. I beleive these are meant to be control characters to bold or underline certain words in the error message, but I have tried changing my terminal type around and have had no luck. I also can't figure out how to turn these characters off, though it would be nice if they worked.

I am ssh'ing in to the box with Putty. I am using the bash shell. This is a fedora 4 system.

Here is a screen shot (chars in red boxes):

Any suggestions/help appreciated!

Thanks,

These are probably introduced by a package commonly known as "colorgcc". Have you tried using any other SSH client, or (if possible) locally? It could be the color codes are not recognized by PuTTY.

colorgcc was not installed, but I did figure it out. In putty I changed the character set from "ISO-8859-1 1998 Latin-1 West Europe" to "UTF-8". Now, instead of a little "a" with a circle above it, they are single quote marks. I must have set the character set to something different when i setup the system initially.

anyway thanks for the help and after looking at colorgcc i'll give it a try.
