My first ever LINUX-ORIGINATED post!!

YAY!!!! HOORAYY!!!!! I got my slackware 8.1 box online!! Now all I have to do is secure it, fix the sound and the wheel thingy on my mouse, and reinstall XP for my wife!!! Got pissed and fdisked it.....oops.

It only took 6 months or so of goofing off and reinstalling it, along with several other distro's, and lurking here, and playing Xtris, or whatever, to get serious and figure out how to use it for something worthwhile.

So anyway, how open to the public is my system now, being "just out of the box" so to speak?

And, no, I am not posting as root, thank you very much. (I hope!!)

TIA for any clues as to what doors to shut and lock.

David

First I would shut off all services I was not using. After that there a million things you can do to make your box more secure. There was a good thread on this in the security forum with hundreds of links on how to secure your box. Do a search in the securtiy forum.

Congratulations in the first place :)

Always glad to find another happy slacker ;)

As crashed suggested, look through your
/etc/services and comment everything you
won't need out ...

A nice starting point for security is always
the files /etc/host.allow & /etc/host.deny.

And later on, set-up a iptables-script in
/etc/rc.d/
maybe like
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall
that you calll from rc.local :)

Cheers,
Tink

Isn't it a thrill to finally get something to work after a struggle?

I admire you because I can barely cope with Mandrake 9.0, let alone Slackware.

Hope you have all kinds of success with your installation.
