Does it have to be grub? I would assume that he could toss in his install disc, and skip to the section on installing the bootloader, and then choose "MBR". Or if there is an update option when tossing in the CD, do that, put something from the CD on there (pico or something small, or if he wants something he didn't install, then that would be a good time) and then get to the part about the bootloader, and then try it from there. This would be the best I can suggest for grub.
If lilo, toss in his CDROM, browse to the LiLO package, and install it. Then run liloconfig if it's an option, or at least make sure the /etc/lilo.conf file looks decent for his needs, and then run /sbin/lilo
