MBR hosed, bios thinks HD wrong type
Hello -
I have a hard drive with a windows 2k partition and a linux partition.
A while ago I installed a Mandrake on the free space. Then I deleted it and ran FIXMBR and fixboot from the windows 2k disk. Windows was ok.
Then I got sick of using 2k and installed ubuntu. First grub would boot ubuntu ok, but wouldn't boot Windows. I needed to use the windows partition, so I ran fixboot and fixmbr again. Now the machine won't boot anything at all.
I noticed in the POST screen it is detecting some quality of the drive as ATA and not LBA - which is wrong I believe.
This probably means I'll have to reinstall my cursed win2k partition again and go through the drudgery of setting up a working 2k installation. I've done this many times already.... I'd rather not do it again (yes I know I screwed up but..). Please tell me how I can fix my MBR, install ubuntu or debian, and live happily ever after.....
Thanks -
Bagleemo
p.s. I have a knoppix disk so I can boot it on that and fool around...
