Talking Matlab or maple for linux

Yes there are... they are called

Matlab

and

Maple

(ie both pices of software have linux versions). If you are current running Windows versions of the software you can even convert the licence to a linux one for no charge. If you buy a concurent licence (for Matlab at least) you get both the windows and Unix (runs on Linux) version of the software on CD.

have a look at the respective websites.
