Mandrake 9.0 : Kernal Panic error

Hi all,
I have Dual boot mandrake/98 - LILO
Problem : Kernal panic : cannot mount filesystem/Kernel error at ----(I dont remember the exact error)

I have the Mandrake 9.0 Cd
How to solve this error and start Linux 9.0.

According to me , The error has come bcos of constantly restarting Linux without proper shutdown(some youngsters at my place do that)

ALso is Ghost s/w of any use here??How to create the FS image for Linux using Ghost???

If Mandrake is to be uninstalled , how to do that??(I am really new to this Linux thing)

regards,
aniket

It may be because of wrong shutdowns. But only if you use ext2 filesystem.
To fix it, you need to boot from your installation CD and choose "rescue". Then you need to repair your filesystem. First look which partition you need to repair. Use 'fdisk /dev/hda' (if you've got Linux installed on your first disk, /dev/hdb if second). Use 'p' to print partitions and their types. Find out which one is Linux (may have 'Linux' label). Note down which partition is it (/dev/hdb4 or something similar). Quit using 'q'. Now: 'fsck.ext2 /dev/hdb4' (use the right value). If you're using filesystem different than Ext2, you need different fsck option (if I remember correctly: fsck.ext3 and fsck.reiserfs, but I'm not sure).
