Windows Media Center

Sorry I am so late to this question.
One of the main reasons I still use Windows is because of the very ease to install and use Windows Media Center. Unfortunately, any time I have tried to use a Linux Mint substitute for Windows Media Center I have been unsuccessful because I was unable to install the solution. (There are no easy and complete instruction for a Linux Mint solution)
Windows Media Center is not supported in Windows 10 and Windows 7 goes out of support in early 2020. Windows 7 does support Windows Media Center. As you can see I will have a dilemma in a year or so and I would like to find a Linux Mint solution. That solution should be as easy to install and use a Windows Media Center is to record and watch over the air TV programs. I currently use a Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner and Windows 7 recognized this tuner without me having to do anything and all I had to do was attach the tuner to Windows Media Center, scan for channels, and I was off and running.
That is exactly what I want from Linux Mint and I am sure there are many more users of Windows Media Center that could benefit from this kind of function.

Not Much

Like someone already said, I find it ignorant/naive to assume you're going to find a particular OS that fulfills all your needs. At the very least, not everyone can say that--and I think the mass forking of major Linux distros and further branching therein clearly exemplifies that notion.

Branching off of that, I agree with what someone also mentioned in this thread about how Linux will simply not be able to perform or support certain environments or aspects expected in an operating system (e.g. hardcore gaming, Abode products).

I use Windows for just about everything because (no surprise) it supports a lot of things Linux simply can't--or at least not to the same degree. That being said, there are things that Linux can do which Windows cannot. I use Linux for my hobbies or leisure projects. I also use Linux for home servers (as well as BSD) amongst others things.

In the end, I think it's all about knowing how to use what type of OS in what environment to fit your needs without hassle. For me, I can run Windows with no problem on my build and I have other boxes running Linux for niche things I don't need/want Windows to deal with. In essence, it's all about using the unique qualities found in each system software to your advantage and reaping the most benefit for what you need. That's it.

I ain't touching Apple's shit though, that's for sure.

Mac OS is to me as Internet Explorer is to browsers. The only reason I'd use it is to run something else (in which case I'd probably sell it to get something to run Linux).

Unhappy What's MISSING??? WordPerfect!

Not that I use WordPerfect myself... Libreoffice does it all fer me.

But I know a couple of old geezers that will NOT use Linux, only because their Wordperfect 8 will not run on it!
One guy will not even upgrade to Win-10. But he WOULD use linux on his old 4Gig system instead of Win-XP, if only it could support WordPerfect.

So you're suggesting WINE? Sure! So tell me how to install WP under WINE, which I have several other Win apps running on...

The lack of linux support for many hardware is the net result of all these surveys on OS popularity.
Are these surveys supported by Mi¢ro$oft et Apple$or their minions???
Almost exclusively.

So, there is no incentive to have firmware or drivers created for the Linux world.

It is always weird to see companies that openly refuse to enter a market.

A simple preferably GUI utility which will persistently control fan speed and allow undervolting for acpi controlled hardware. And/or a simple option on indicator-cpufreq (or similar GUI tool) to disable the ondemand daemon and make changes you make to governor type or max freq persist.

A mainstream file manager that has a search function built in - ie a combo of Thunar and Catfish.

If PhotoFiltre LX works, for it to be added to mainstream package repos - for me Mint. I'm trying my best to not break my lovely system with non-supported software, but I haven't found a simple photo editor that works as well as PhotoFiltre does in Win.

Missing in Linux

Specifically Linux, I am not sure there is anything I find I can not do.
Better support from commercial software vendors would be nice, but I think that is a chicken and egg situation that will be solved over time.
All my hardware works out the box and being open source means I can build my OS as I like, not as somebody else thinks is right so I guess I would say the only thing left is more bugs fixed, not that I seem to run into many of those; it has been a long time since I was able to segfault the kernel as an ordinary user!

Another thing still missing from Linux is more users. Imagine there being enough peguinistas in the world to have a face to face version of linuxquestions.org

And I just found another bit of windows or android only hardware - my car's dashcam (the android app wants to turn wifi on/off as it likes and initiate communication to unspecified other parties - this alone makes it unusable for me). At least I can transfer files from the SD card.

I'm a Linux user who, when forced to use another OS, wants/expects it to work like Linux, and complains when it doesn't.

What's missing Is a big company like Google launch a version of Linux, In partnership with Adobe, NVIDIA, AMD, INTEL and other hardware and game-driven manufacturers ... It would revolutionize the market ... I think that's perfectly possible.

My missing stuff
a) Codecs that are not patented. MP4

b) Universal Video Drivers == vendors to create a driver that corresponds

c) A software update that has an undo that matches the update that created it.

I have tried every year or so - and in vain - these past two decades to get Linux working. I'm no newbie! I have used Linux since 1995 - when it was called CP/M. But what I want to see in an OS is smooth install and that everything Just Works. Not so much for me, but for the real newbies. Even recently when I tried again (over Christmas 2017) I could not get access to my NAS. I spend 5 hours over 5 days before I threw in the towel. Forums had all sorts of different reasons and solutions. And all "geeky" responses.

These days with Google Home and smart TVs - homes have up to 8 devices each - people want their devices to Just Work. Linux (all the major distros) is still very far far away from that. How to solve? Sit with a newbie who buys a Windows laptop and observe what it is they do. Sharing and accessing shared folders on my Windows PC from my Windows laptop is automatic in Windows. There is nothing to do (except wait for 90 minutes every 2 weeks or so while the OS "updates"!)

Yes, I hate Windows. But I have tried SO hard unsuccessfully to find a Linux distro that can surpass Windows OOB (out of the box) that it is sad, very sad.
