Question Linux distro for a MacBook (Pro, maybe)

Perhaps someone could shed some light on which distro would work the best on a macBook or macBook Pro that's 2 or 3 years old?

A friend is passing along the above to me.
It has been sitting a year or two and I haven't even seen it yet, so I'll find out if it lights up in a few days.

Being a Linux follower, I'd like to put an appropriate Linux distro on it and scrap whatever OS X version it has, providing that I can get it to work reasonably.

So I'm here asking you experts to guide me in the right direction!!

Many Thanks, Rick
