Instability in OpenGL apps

I've had two different OpenGL apps totally freeze my computer in the last two days... needed to reboot, couldn't get out of X or anything.

Here are my specs

AMD athlon
Geforce 3 (with Nvidia drivers)
Stock mandrake 8.1 kernel, other stuff.

Anyone have similiar problems?

You might have a few conflicting openGL libs left, download nv_check.sh to check your nvidia install.

No conflicting files were found! Your installation appears to be OK!

The games run, they just crash the system hard after a few minutes of play.

there's a hardware bug between amd athlons and many nvidia cards. it causes crashes in gl progs and other seemingly random manifestations. you can get a workaround for it by putting

mem=nopentium

in your lilo.conf file.

I use Mandrake 8.1.. it has some custom boot up screen (it literally says Mandrake on it), but I don't know what file controls the kernel parameters or whatever for loading linux.

check in /etc for lilo.conf. Don't forget if you have lilo that after making change you need to run
lilo
at a prompt

there was supposedly

an AMD hardware bug (via /. a month or so ago) that affected OpenGL. It may or may not be patched in the default kernel. I run an amd with an nvidia card but the only game i play is uplink.

mem=nopentium ???

I tried that line, because I think I'm having the same problems, and lilo just gives me a syntax error. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

David, pbharris helped me out in another forum. It was supposed to be:

append="mem=nopentium" .

Thanks anyways though,
