HSF Winmodem Dell Dimension 8300

Hey All,

Ok, i need some serious help here. Ive installed Fedora core 1, on my dell dimension 8300. Installed the alsa drivers. etc. and all works fine. Then, comes my modem. I download the drivers from linuxant as an rpm..and execute it. Thereafter running "hsfconfig" and running through the setup process. I put my ISP info in the wizard (56k) and everything goes through smoothly. Until, i try to dial...I hear the modem try to initialize through the speakers, but then i get a sudden cut off. I cancel and try again but no luck. If i keep doing this for an extended period of time, it'll finally connect. But im not prepared to wait so long for a connection. Sometimes when intializing i even hear music playing..its quite strange....It's a HSF modem and I really wanna get my desktop up and running on the net with linux. Does anyone have any suggestions, or answers as to what I should do? Appreciate it! Thanks Alot!!

Eh...... The dreaded winmodem question.... We probably have the same modem, I use a dell laptop too... Theres no easy reply.... You do have the right site tho.... Make sure the rpm matches your kernel version. Thats key. I always would download the tarball... You can use that bad boy on any distro... Screw those RPM's..... Open up a prompt and type:

tail -f /var/log/messages

Then try to fire up your modem....
Report back with the output.... I got mine to work flawlessly... Try disabling the sound... Thats a quirk I've noticed..... I've used RH/Fedora before, for a long time actually... Using the "Network something-or-other" in the hat rack? Default Gnome/RH app? Ummmm..... Man, I'll have to think for a spell on this... Been using DSL for awhile cause I got sick of 5kbps rates....
150kbps > 5kbps....... WAY EASIER to set up too!!

<edit>
Oh... Dimension... Doesn't matter... Your probably still using a conexant chipset... I use an Inspiron
