If your asking about the real username (First Last Name) in /etc/passwd, as root you can use command chfn or vipw.

If your asking about the system username in /etc/passwd, as root use command vipw.

The situation:

the network: Linux server (don't know the distro have to go to site)
and 9 XP machines. From what is described I need to rename an existing user to a new one. This new one should have all credentials of an old one.
It was described as all users have a roaming profile. I don't know if Linux supports this term .
I guess that there is a login script that is assigned to user.

I know that I can change user name in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
Probably in /etc/group too.

What else should be done in order to provide full access to resources of renamed user?

Please provide a detailed answer.

Thanks.
Michael
