How to play MIDI files: needed a MIDI mapper?

I need to set up some MIDI tools in Linux because I'm an amateur music composer and would like to do my music under Linux and not under Windows.

I installed timidity but I am unable to play MIDI files in Linux.

By the way, I can get my sound output through this module

i810_audio

I've not configured ALSA. I have an on-board NVidia chipset sound with my A7N8X-E motherboard. Is there any way to choose a MIDI mapper in Linux because I don't have hardware MIDI?

I am not using ALSA because ALSA will not recognize my onboard sound card. Instead I'm using the module i810_audio with OSS.
