Lord of the Rings places here.

Shire

Mordor

Even flash drives are labeled with LOTR places.

For my ThinkPads I use latin names for different toads. (Swedish "padda" = english "toad")
For my servers and stationary computers I use first names of russian writers or composers, like Igor (Stravinskij).

Talking LOTR Hostnames

Workstations other than WindBlows - "Good" characters from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
Servers other that WindBlows - "Good" locations within Middle Earth
WindBlows Workstations - "Evil" character names from orcs, goblins, etc
WindBlows Servers - "Evil" locations within Middle Earth

All names are found in the works of Tolkien and/or the Peter Jackson films.

Have been using Linux for over 15 years; no Windo$e other than the one on my wife's embroidery machine.

I have three boxes in the home net. They're named after the location in the house, e.g. library, Ham-shack, etc. I currently run Mint 17, PCLos (always up to date) and Mepis on the laptop.

Cool! This November will mark 18 years for me, and I run strictly Linux and OpenBSD at the house. My wife likes Linux better than she did Windows or OSX. Besides, it's easier for me to maintain

For my home, I just use the name of the main user or the location. At work we used functional names for each layer, followed by a number assigned chronologically as the layer expanded. Replacement systems adopted the original name. Made backup/restore operations easy.

Corporate naming policy:
function[num].os.rack.datacenter.city.state.country.domain.com

Example:
laptop01.win.f01.level3.miami.fl.us.domain.com
coresw01.hw.s30r02f02.level3.miami.fl.us.domain.com
fs01.linux.s03r02f02.level3.miami.fl.us.domain.com

My favorite musical artists and groups. I've got enough to last me decades, and there are always new ones to add, just like their namesake devices.

Colours of the rainbow. After the names run out, switch to frequencies or wavelengths - no limits there.

I've named my computers (so far) after computers in films that have behaved rather badly:-

HAL - 2001
PROTEUS - Demonseed
HECTOR - Saturn 3

I take my host names from a short list of revolutionary socialist heroes and leaders. Or even pretenders to such a designation.

Makes me popular with the NSA types, I'm sure.

I used egyptian gods after that roman and then norwegian, partially inspired by stargate.
Due to new policies and easier maintainablity we now use first two letters of the company - application - incremental number so af-mail-01.
However our esx clusters are named after mario characters
