Ick... I'm pretty sure kernel 2.6 supports this (called software suspend), but Redhat insists on trying to backport everything to 2.4. I use Redhat 8 (kernel 2.4.14) but whenever I try to enable software suspend, the kernel fails to compile. I downloaded version 2.4.21, and support for software suspend was completely missing, which indicates that the official 2.4 kernel does not support it.

Bottom line: try kernel 2.6 (from kernel.org)

Mandrake 9.2rc1 and 2 seem to have this menu feature... though I've been too busy messing with getting more menu entries to try it atm
9.2 is also meant to ship with a 2.6 test kernel, and there are several pre compiled in the Cooker (Mandrake development) contribution mirrors, and some 2.4 kernels with the pre-emptive patches applied, etc.
