Hardware requirements for file server

I plan to create a debian etch file (samba) server. It will be useing filesystem encryption (from the debian partitoner) to protect the files. And possibly monnit There are 4 users over a Ethernet (100) Lan.

What would you say the recomended hardware is?

P.S.any idea what encrpytion alothogram should I use? If not I'll just use the default

4 users doing what? It all depends on the intended use. If you're
going to have 4 people read/write large amounts of data at all times
you'll need a fair bit of CPU (given the encryption) as well as a good
I/O sub-system. If you have 4 people mostly reading at low speeds (e.g.
listening to mp3) an old dog (e.g. a PIII 400 with 256MB) will be just
fine....

Cheers,
Tink

Most probobly low amounts of work followed by an occasional sudden surge when someone decides to do a big backup.
