GNOME or KDE for older hardware?

OK, I have this freind who, like me, wants to stick it to microsoft and obviously his first priority is to reduce their market share.

he wants me to install linux on his old 500mhz pentium III machine with 128 megs of ram. Now obviously i can configure it for him, but afterward i want him to have some controll, so i plan on installing either KDE or GNOME.

since his ram is obviously limited, my question is; which of the two desktop environments will be most capable, and quickest, running on 128 megs of mem.

obviously I'll go through and trim away extra daemons that dont need to be running, but i still need to choose a full fledged desktop environment thats easy on the memory. (XFCE or Fluxbox wont cut it for him)

I've found that GNOME requires more resources than KDE. I run KDE sometimes, but will also run fvwm95 for the performance increase.
