You can't ask questions about religion. The flame wars will never end.

I think what he means is that it is a matter of personal preference. 9.2 comes with both interfaces. Personally I like KDE.

Why don't you try both and see which one you like better?

I suggest GNOME for now, but make sure you use the terminal a lot. Once you get to be more familiar with it, switch to something like fluxbox. Once ya grow outta fluxbox, switch to ratpoison.

i think squalls idea seems good (except the ratpoision part)

pick whatever, but be sure to learn the CLI as its the same on anything... then you can just make your own desktop from other program, and not have to use one big DE that comes with almost everything of its own (esp KDE for some reason)

until you pick, heres a easy suggestion tho : look at screen shots, then pick whatever looks best (after all, looks count if everything else is the same)

I personally think that KDE is ugly. It's not pretty at all. GNOME is way more enjoyable to use than KDE too.

Look at this!

good idea. there isn't a HUGE difference functionally-speaking between the two, at least not for a newbie. they're both relatively easy to use, in their own way. you will be able to figure how to get around in either one in short order.

KDE ppl say their DE is far more customizable than Gnome's, while Gnome advocates tend to say simplicity is a virtue, not a fault -- and it makes their DE less resource-hungry.

I'd say the more important thing is to figure out which distro you're most comfortable with and go with their default, if there is one. otherwise close your eyes and flip a coin.

which windowmanager?

i think gnome and kde are both pretty if you tweak them enough.
Personally i'm greedy so i use fluxbox with a kde kicker bar and gnome filebrowser. as for speed .... difficult to judge the difference ... they're both a bit slow in comparison to flux

VI is better than Emacs
Gnome is better than KDE

And I dare anyone to refute me.
Yes.... Silly question. Try them both and decide for yourself.
