executables and "make" command not working

1.none of the executable files I download work.
2.The "Make" command in the terminal program is not recognized.

How can I fix these?

What error do you get?

It's likely that you either do not have make installed or it is not in your path. See what 'locate make' gets you.

Let me guess: SuSe personal edition?

This SuSe version does not have a toolchain installed (or even available!) so you cannot build software from source code.

Installing the toolchain will involve a very time-consuming hunt for third party rpms from the usuall repositories, and having to deal with (perhaps circular) dependancies. This will not be an easy or pleasant task for a newbie.

My 2 cents: get yourself a distro that isn't stillborn.

Which executables? What is the name of these files...

Typically you need to prepend "./" to the file to tell bash to run the command in the current directory, if it is not in your $PATH, however...if this was the case you would get a "not found" error, not silence.

You need to explain *exactly* what you're doing for us to troubleshoot this...
