Downloading CD images (iso)

When you download an image, how do you check that its come down ok? i have been having problems with all of the linux images i have downloaded and wondered how to check. i have heard something mentioned that you compare with the website where you got the image to the one inside the image, but am unsure what to do?

Help would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

You check the md5 sum. The site may have the md5 code for the image posted somewhere, or it may be in a file on the cd. Use md5summer to check.

i downloaded it from several locations - there was no one specific check sum file - but i solved the problem, it was the software that was writting the cd that was a fault
