default to | less in terminal

Probably asked many times but searching went nowhere.

How do you make a terminal default to less or allow scrolling like man pages?
Working with no xwindows and tired of typing "cat somefile | less" and "ls | less". Tried adding "PAGER=less export PAGER" to /etc/profile but it didn't seem to work.
Thought of using aliases but couldn't wrap my head around the "somefile" part of cat="cat somefile | less"

edit:forgot to mention Slackware 10.1

edit/ nevermind, "less somefile" works fine.
*crawls away in embarasment*

er, yeah that really doesn't make sense to pipe EVERYTHING through less... very messy.
