1) I would appreciate any help in trying to decrease the size of the desktop icons (not panel icons).
I've tried to rightclick on the desktop and 'configure desktop' didn't have an option to do so.
2) Also, when browsing to the root of a hard-drive, there is a lost+found folder. What is this for? and how can I at-least hide it as a system folder or similar.
1) Go to Control Center, under Appearance->Icons. Click on "Advanced". You will have an option to change the icon size. By default, this setting will affect both the desktop icons and the icons in Konqueror. If you don't want the Konqueror icons to be the same size, then open up Konqueror. Click on the "View" menu and find the submenu for icon size.
lost+found is used by e2fsck when it finds a finds a file lost inside the filesystem by a improper shutdown. Just ignore it, unless e2fsck does work and finds something.

And is there any way to make smaller the distance between the icons now? I've changed to 32x32 sized icons but they're too far away from each other now
