Question Changing environment path.

I want to change my bash environment path to include . so I can execute programs by just typing program_name instead of ./program_name. Nothing I've done so far seems to work. My current path is -->

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin

I got this from the .bash_profile file. Using the command echo $PATH shows a path of something like /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/xr11rg/bin:/usr/local/bin: and then some game directories and such.

Exactly where do I make the modifications?

Thanks for your help!

add it to /etc/bashrc to make it affect everyone, or ~/.bashrc to just affect yourself
