Whenever I create/edit a file the current version of that file is backed up with a tilda added to the file name.

I guess this is the journal feature of ext3 file system. That's, good but sometimes its irritating to see these files lying around. Is there a way to turn this off or even better configure it so that the files are hidden, i.e. the backup file name is
.filename~
I know that ext3-journaling is ext2 and I found a link from the forums about that :
http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/ext2toext3.htm
But I would like to know whether there's any other way to do this.
Thanks
