Unhappy Can't get GRUB to boot Linux off of a USB stick

I have 2 operating systems, Windows Me on the first partition of my first hard drive, and GRUB boots it just fine. I also have Slax 5 installed on a USB stick (recognized in linux as /dev/sda1) but I can't seem to get GRUB to see it. I've tried (hd1,0), (hd2,0), (sd0,0), (sd1,0), I can't get anything to work. My BIOS doesn't support booting from a USB stick so I need to do it with GRUB, or else I'm going to have to figure out how to use syslinux. Can anyone help?

Pls consider going to your mobo site and downloading the flash for your bios so it can see usb....then no probs after that.

AFAIK grub (legacy) on a hard drive boot can not yet see usb
