boot a machine with no video card

Hi Folks, having an issue I hope somebody might shed some light on.

I would like to take the video card out of my "server" (desktop motherboard (intel dp35dp) being used as a headless server). I want to use the card for another computer. I am cheap.

I am unable to boot the box without the video card in it. There is no setting in the bios that is obvious to me that will 'ignore' video.

Is booting without a video card possible? Do I need to give the kernel some parameters to boot without a video card or is this the domain of the bios?

If you can't do it without a video card, you could purchase a $5 vga card and stick it in.

I have an ancient pci video card, I am trying that now. It boots. But I always seem to need a monitor plugged in with that card. I am making progress. Maybe I just needed the moral support :-)

Thanks
