Question Bad FAT... re-mounts to read only.

A while ago I was busy coping a file to a FAT partition and was rudely stopped by a power failure.

I rebooted and mounted the partition RW, but when I tried to access it, the kernel spat out a message and remounted the partition to read only.

I didn't think much of it then...
All I did was boot to Windows and run scandisk.
This fixed the problem.

But now, i'm interested to know if there is in fact a way I could've fixed the problem in Linux.
Is there some sort of scanning/fixing executable for FAT partitions in Linux?
