Wolfenstein: ET Crashes After Installing ATI Drivers
Well, the title pretty much says it all. The game was a little bit laggy, so I decided to install the ATI drivers for my video card because the problem seemed to be in the video processing. I installed the drivers, rebooted, and tried to play ET. The screen turns black, and then quickly siwtches back to my desktop.
I don't have a lot of knowledge in this area, but I'll try. First, backup your xorg.conf file. Then run fglrxconfig from a terminal. If it still doesn't work, post the contents of the file.

Okay, I ran glxgears and got this (I let it run for a while and then closed it):
Code:
631 frames in 5.0 seconds = 126.200 FPS
600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 120.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 120.000 FPS
720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 144.000 FPS

I'm going to take a guess and say that I don't have the hardware accelerating drivers for my Radeon 9200se. The strange thing is that I installed the ATI drivers after the game was a little laggy and now it won't run. I recall the installer saying something about there being an error in the driver install, so I'll look for the log.
i'm going to refer back to my attempt to try to start ET in terminal, where I got this:
Code:
***********************************************************
You are using software Mesa (no hardware acceleration)!
Driver DLL used: libGL.so.1
If this is intentional, add
"+set r_allowSoftwareGL 1"
to the command line when starting the game.

Does anyone have any idea for how i could install the hardware accelerating drivers? I'm not too good with Linux, but I have managed to do some stuff that wasn't easy (getting my unsupported wireless card to work, installing apps and libraries, compiling things, and etc), so I imagine this can't be too hard. Thanks for your time!
Sorry I took so long to reply, but it sounds like the ati driver isn't installed correctly. According to a tutorial I read on the drivers, the command fglrxinfo should start out saying something like:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
Try the command fglrxinfo and see if it says something like this in the output. I am honestly still trying to get the driver to work correctly (always says its the open mesa project's instead of ATI's). Also, according to another tutorial I read on the driver, your fps with glxgears should be around 2000 (Yes, 2000) with ATI's driver. Both of the tutorials are writtren for Fedora Core 3. While on that subject...what distribution are you using?
Originally posted by ThomasJ Well, I'm giving up on this card. Any suggestions for a card around $200 USD that has good support?
Its been a while since I have jacked with ATI cards.. I used to be good at getting them going. Anyways.. for a new card.. any nvidia card should treat you well.
