Try restarting your session... Just one question... Do you know if SuSE uses devfs? (becuase if it does, then you'll have to make the change somewhere else...) Anyway try if this works, if it does, we'll worry about devfs later.
Fedora and Red Hat come with a tool called redhat-config-xfree86, maybe if you look into your /usr/bin directory for a program with an X somewhere in the name (suse-xfreeconfigurator, or something) you may try to execute that.
I'm using Slackware 9.1, ATI 9700 with 3.7.0 driver, external agpgart, kernel 2.4.24 and when I run the demo there is texture corruption on the screen, and the game exits in 5-10 seconds after starting it.
Here's what it says :
------------------------------------
#./ut2004demo
ERROR: Could not open SkaarjPack.u for reading!
ERROR: Could not open SkaarjPack_rc.u for reading!
Crash information will be saved to your logfile.
-----------------------------------
Here's my fglrxinfo :
----------------------------------------------
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9700 x86/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.7.0)
------------------------------------------------
fgl_glxgears works (600 pfs) and glxgears (3200 fps). I'm loading fglrx and agpgart in rc.modules. I have DRI disabled in the kernel and in XF86Config.
Only thing I can think of would be to try and reinstall the demo... If you look closely the ERROR messages, they say the files could not be opened for reading, so maybe you changed the permissons on the directroy?
