Sound problems Starcraft/Wine on FC4

I've spent some time trying to make Starcraft work with wine on my FC4 installation. After some tweeks it almost works. The problem is the sound. When I play approximatly 2/3 of all sound effects are replaced by a terrible noise.

I had to use the option

[dsound]
"HardwareAcceleration" = "Emulation"

in my .wine/config. Otherwise Starcraft simply crashed on startup. Here's the complete configuration:

uname -a
Linux wasp 2.6.12-1.1456_FC4 #1 Thu Sep 22 02:11:36 EDT 2005 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Starcraft+Broodwar (Patch 1.13e)

wine --version
Wine 20050524

Graphics
fglrx drivers (ati mobility x700)

Sound
ati (OSS drivers)

I found a couple of HOWTOs on the net, but most of them where outdated (old wine versions). Does anyone have a clue?

/d

Noticed that it seems you are using oss as sound output... can you change it to alsa?

Maybe I should try it. It sound like a weekend project. How will changing the driver affect my other applications (they work beautifully)? Do you have any pointers to useful howtos?

alsa works a lot better when I use it with starcraft *after a few hours the music cuts out from time to time but thats easy fix by just getting into a new game or restarting the game all together* so give it a try with the 1.13 patch though I have'nt been able to get onto battle net can you?

I'm running FC4 but how did you get it to play? I installed it but it won't play off the disks.... it just tells me to make sure the disk is in.....

The main thing with the no cd issue was that it wouldnt detect it so I setup another "drive" in the config. I had to do the same just to install ryzom too. Now I've kept using the version of wine just before the winecfg tool was released so this is what I did:
[Drive H]
"Path" = "/tmp/starcraft"
"Type" = "cdrom"
"Label" = "starcraft"
"Filesystem" = "win95"

And would cd to /tmp/starcraft and just do wine install.exe and select play to get into the game. I put the type as cdrom to "fool" it so to speak so it wouldnt ask at the time I did'nt know if it would work or not but it seems to do the job just fine. a lot of other games that need a cd and have trouble detecting it can do this too such as like I said ryzom I needed to do just the same for installing it. Hope this helps and sorry for the long wait for the reply.

*with winecfg you sould be able to do the same thing it should'nt be that hard to do*
