Return to Castle Wolfenstein GOTY: Cannot write to hunkusage.dat

I ran RTCW GOTY official Linux installation with file: wolf-linux-1.4-goty.x86.run and then copied all .pk3 files from the CDs, as instructed by the following file which come with the installer.
(I cannot post urls until after 5 posts. To describe it, the file is named INSTALL and is found in /usr/local/games/wolfenstein, as well as on the internet.)

So I run wolfsp (or wolfmp or just wolf and then click my way to single player mode) and click "play". Loading bar gets about 9/10ths of the way there and an error comes up: Cannot write to hunkusage.dat. Return to title screen.

Did I misread the directions? At one point I extracted all the .pk3s with the same end result, and very messy title screen and menus. I scrapped that install and started fresh, again copying the .pk3s instead of extracting.
I (as user) have permission to read, write and execute .pk3s.

Also I notice that there are multiple copies of file hunkusage.dat in different .pk3s.
/home/user/.wolf is empty.

I'd try starting the game as root for once, and see if the problem still arises. If not, then it's a permission problem (which I guess it is, but just do the above to make sure).

IF it appears to be a permission problem, then run:

Code:
chown <your username here>.users /home/users/ -Rv
chown <your username here>.users /home/users/. -Rv
chmod a+rwx <your username here>.users /home/users/.<the et folder here> -Rv
Try those, and if it still doesn't work then you didn't follow the instalation procedure properly :-).

Greets, Target

ps. If this still doesn't work, then you can try to chmod the whole /usr/local/games/wolfenstein map to your user & +rwx permissions, but this is generally not recommend. Preferably dont use this, as it shouldn't be neccesary normally.
