Quake 3 - Resolution issues

Hi

Just installed Quake3 on my slackware box. After a few problems with sound which I finally got sorted I have one other problem.

I run my desktop at 1152 x 864 and Quake3 at 640x480. When I exit Quake3 my desktop is set at 640x480 and I have to ctrl alt backspace out of x and then restart x again to get back to normal resolution.

Is there any way around this? Shouldn't my desktop simply switch back to 1152 x 864?
