I am re-posting my original question again,as the suggestion I have been given does not work for me.

NOTE: I have had a stroke three years ago, and have some brain-damage, thus I am a perpetual newbie.

I have had a problem with a particular game for about fifteen months. The game is the Linux version of Ryzom. It is an MMORPG that has been around for about 10 years and it is based out of, I think, France.

Now, I have two monitors, a proprietary NVIDIA driver, and the video card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650. It runs on an 8-core processor (AMD FX 8350) and it is currently running under Debian Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64, 12GB of memory, and 5GB of swap space. I am currently running under 340.65-2 under nvidia-driver package and nvidia-kernel-dkms.

Here is the problem. It seems to me that my video driver crashes while playing, it reverts to running on a single monitor, and then I restart the game and *sometimes* after that, it runs fine, and sometimes the video driver crashes again, repeatedly.

In the past, I have used EVERY versions of the video driver, to no avail. I have set the driver to use a single monitor, to no avail. I have used kernel versions 3.14-2-amd64 and 3.2.0-4, to no avail.

Also, before I play that particular game, I need to poweroff my computer and use xfce or fluxbox as my windows manager, as I have compositing on KDE, and games do not work well with KDE+compositing.

Like I have said, I think it a problem with my video driver, but could also be a problem with my kernel. However, I do not think anyone else in the Ryzom community has this problem that I have.

Also, this only occurs when running Ryzom, I have no problem running Steam games, warzone2100, 0AD, Sauerbraten, Nexuiz, or any other, more graphic inyensive, games.

If you need some more questions to help me diagnose this problem, please ask.

I have absolutely no ideas, although it could possibly be UEFI that could be the problem.

Please help me, because these incessant crashes are driving me crazy, and I WILL play this game, so me not playing this game is not an option for me.

I guess it's best if you try the easiest steps first and gradually move on to checks that are harder to perform.

So first make sure it's not a loose cable duh!

Looks like other owners of GTX 650 have similar problems with multimonitor setup in other games, and certain video driver versions work better than others. Did you try older video drivers?

Once you do this, and the problem persists, it's pretty much like "ok, in this case just check EVERYTHING" )

Since it happens after a while of playing, I would also check for overheating of each monitor and the computer itself (temperatures of GPUs, CPUs etc.).

Check for any deformed/bulged capacitors.

Check the voltages and temperatures under stress.

Lastly, tho unlikely, might be a case of some components losing connection once they reach certain high temperature (cable or soldering connections). Those are hard to find/spot.

I had first posted this a few months ago, and I have reposted it again in the hopes that someone else could give me a clue.

Now, over the past few months, I have used every Nvidia driver that works for me, that is all of the recent ones, and I have installed the Debian nvidia-driver which is version 340.65-2. I have checked the temperature on the video card and the CPU, and they check out OK.

I have checked out everything other than physically removing my second screen and configuring UEFI (and UEFI scares the hell out of me).

My computer is not overheating, I also run some much more intensive graphical games and have absolutely no problem with those other games. Also, Ryzom is approximately ten years old, and though they upgrade the servers periodically, the graphics technology is still ten years old. It really doesn't put any stress on my system, certainly not as much as my other games.

Like I have said, I am at my wits end. The thing that is sad is that I will still play this MMORPG, even though it crashes, because I love the hell out of the game.

Basically, my question is: which drivers did you try so far?
On the other hand, if you say other games work fine, I don't know if driver could be at fault here...

Did you try sending a support ticket to developers? What was the response if any?

OK, I will check out those links when I get home.

Also, since I started using debian's nvidia-driver package, I will need to uninstall that package and install the driver itself. It could be that it cannot deal with two monitorsn= for this game, so I will give that a try.

It still keeps crashing.

I physically removed one of my monitors, ran nvidia-xconfig again and it booted up with one monitor. I played the game for a few minutes and it crashed. So, I put my second monitor back on my computer.

The other links were of no use to my situation, as they did not apply to my problem.

So, I am still somewhat confused, upset, and I will be repostion this message in a few months.

I am having this same problem with Ryzom.

I have played for a year. No problems. Now for the past three weeks I can't log in. I can log in but I crash right away.

I have updated all my drivers. I am using openGl. Lubuntu Linux.

I am seriously wondering at this point if one of the players sent me a piece of malware while I was on a tell with them.

The game is a bit buggy, but still playable.
The crashes are considered "regular crashes" they occur when you travel in a certain direction in certain areas.
I have learned to avoid those places in certain directions, and I don't crash anymore.

The support team is volunteer, mostly. There is ONE paid developer in the game, the rest are volunteers. However, I love the hell out of this MMORPG, so while I complain a little. I still pay to play this wonderful game.

I downloaded the Steam version of Ryzom. It works to an extent. My connection is still slow until I get the new ISP out to the house. I was checking /var/crash there is a crash report there that I clicked on it loaded up the old version (native version) of ryzom. Everything works fine now.

I believe the Steam install updated the Nvidia driver that I couldn't get to update. Or there is something extra in the Steam package????

Anway it's working but I lost my desktop short cut and the only way to start it is from an outdated crash report

I'm working on reinstalling the whole OS.

Great Game Ryzom or I wouldn't go to all this trouble.
