Unhappy png_write_rows error on compile

there are a couple games i've tried to build from source, and i get an error about png_write_rows not being found. i have i don't know how many png libs and dev packages installed and every other program i have that uses png compiles or installs from rpm fine. what could be causing this error?

currently running mandrake 9.1 (9.2 by middle of next week, so they may or may not work then. lol)

if anyone has an idea on this, please let me know.
thanx
