Play Left 4 dead online on Linux with friends on Windows?

I have installed Ubuntu on a extern hard disc previously, so i can choose if I buy Left 4 dead 2 on Linux or on Windows. My friends play it on Windows but I don't know if you can play Linux games online with players with Windows games.

Depends on the game. But I say it should be no problem to join games between windows and linux games. As for most of the games I know of there are gameservers for linux that you can connect to with a windows client. So why should it not work the other way around.

Isn't left4dead on Steam? If so the new steamOS is build on linux and I dare say that they want all the people to share servers.
