This is a long shot but does any remember the name of this obscure old Linux distro from 2004/2005 that was packed full of all the top open source games you could find on HappyPenguin at the time?

It was a live CD (possibly DVD) with the option of installing to the hard drive. I can't remember which distro it was based on possibly Knoppix or Gentoo. It used a very simple window manager. It did have Doom on it too.

I can't seem to find it on distrowatch at all. I do remember it being purchasable on linuxcd.org but hunt for it on wayback machine and I just can't find it on there.

I am aware of "Games Knoppix" but that was not it. I am pretty sure it had it's only unique name.

It's possible that I am the only person in the world that remembers it and it's just a lost distro on the sea of esoteric distros.

I remember a super duper gaming CD or DVD of some sort but never ran it. I think it was based on Gentoo but don't really remember.

Sadly it's none of those. They are all to modern.

The distro in question was literally packed full of every open source\public domain\freeware game you could think of at the time: Jump n Bump, Adonthell, BZ Flag, Pingus, Doom, Engima, FreeCiv, Vulture's Eye, Neverball, et cetra.

Did you change "Status" from "Active" to "All" or "Discontinued"? linuX-gamers Live DVD seems to fit your description.

I did but that isn't it either.. that was from around 2010. The One I am talking about came out around 2004/2005... I think it used fluxbox or something similar as the window manager.

I had a copy at the time. It was discontinued. I moved on to other options. There is a GAME-OVER edition of Sparky Linux, and there was an "Ubuntu clone chock full of games for a time. I have not looked for those in several years.

Actually as I recall there were two, somewhat different. One by The Linux Gaming Project and one put out by a group for a publication: it may have been LinuxJournal.

Even if I could find an image, that material would be VERY old now. I use articles like https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks...ros-for-gaming for clues these days.

I know it would be very old now and it's highly likely it's a "lost distro" in terms of disk images.. but it's more for minor nostalgia and would be nice to answer the question in my brain of "what the hell was that distro?!?" :P

I remember Rogue Class Linux, but I think it was after the time frame OP specified.

I did have another go at looking through linuxcd.org on wayback.. as I am 98% sure it was for sale on that, at one point. However the site wasn't archived super well.

2004, 2005 Mandrake died and Mandriva was born, Debian, Red Hat, Suse where the most popular. Of course there where more like Slackware, Gentoo, Peanut Linux, etc that where great as well. etc. Around that same time ubuntu came out, well shortly before. I know I am missing quite a bit but I am going by memory.

I did some quick research. My favorite distros back then use to be Mandrake until the merged with Connectiva and they became Mandriva. But before that... Could it be Mandrake Gaming Edition?

I know this post is old but now I am curious myself.

I remember two of those, and I might even have the last release of one of them somewhere in my old junk box. I was depressed when they stopped making those. It made sense though: although they get little notice, there are now more FOSS games than can fit on a single blueray disk with compression!
