HL2 Not working (nor CSS)

I know this should go on the transgaming forums, but i never get a response there. 1. HL2 gets to the fuzzy screen at the start (like it is loading to show the menu), picture of city 17, you know, it is going, then it stops, no error, but never loads, the computer isn't frozen, but I have to ctrl-alt-f2 telinit 3, telinit 5 to get back to X. CSS just sits at a black screen, but still not frozen. My computer is compatible with HL2, because I played it all the time when I had windows with nary a hint of lag. Is it my computer, Cedega, or Steam? sorry there is no error output to see.
