Graphics problem running Age of Mythology in Wine

I installed Age of Mythology and Age of Mythology: The Titans Expansion on Debian through Wine. I used legal discs to install them. When I run the game, the units are often distorted beyond recognition. Most of the distorted units look flattened and recangular, and some look like crumpled up pieces of paper. Sometimes the units look how they should and then become destorted. Some units may look fine and others distorted within the same screen. The game only runs when I open it through a terminal, and I receive this error message while running:
Code:
err:d3d_surface:surface_load Not supported on scratch surfaces.
. Other than this graphics problem, the game runs fine. My computer is an HP Pavilion dv5000 with 2GB ram, Genuine Intel® CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz × 2, Intel® 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2 graphics card, and it runs on a 32-bit version of Debian. The game ran fine on the computer when it ran Windows XP, so I think my hardware is fine, unless something was damaged. Age of Empires I and II with expansions work fine on the system, if that helps locate the problem. I know those games are older than Age of Mythology, however.
Any help is appreciated.

What version of wine are you using ? Make sure to use one that is listed as supported (preferably gold or platinum rating):

Make sure you patch the game to the latest version as well, because 1.0 has memory leaks that may cause what you are seeing. Lower graphics detail settings.

You can try disabling GLSL (not same game, but maybe same symptoms):

I'm using version 1.4.1. Synaptic's latest version is the one I'm running. Should I download it from the website?

First try some of the fixes. If you're running Age of Mythology Gold edition you may want to update wine, otherwise it should work with 1.4.x. If nothing else works you can always try a newer wine version, but the listed versions are your best bet.
