I got a radeon 9700 pro, given that the ati drivers suck, how much worse would it play than on windows? I have a dual boot of XP, but I'd rather play under linux, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it, and I'd love it if I can get some games working. Is it gonna look just as good as the windows version too? Have all the featurs of dx9 and everything? And I didn't know you could play farcry under linux, is it missing anything, dx9 features etc? And I've never heard of cadega(sp?). Is it better than wine or what? Hard to install/use?

If the graphics aren't fancy, then you can totally get 7000 FPS.

cedega is winex, namechaneg and all.

9700pro should be good after a while, just fool with different drivers until you get decent performance. it's a lot of effort. seriously, i'd go for a 5900XT, got that reciept?

no, I got it 2 years ago. I love it in windows, but even those drivers are starting to suck. Drivers should get better with newer releases, at least there, you got better drivers to go back to

Well, there's only so much that a software driver can do, especially on a Radeon 9700 Pro. It came out like 2 years ago so it's time for us to upgrade to the Radeon 10000000000.

I'm thinking I'll keep it till the next series of videocards come out, it's still good. Got it oc'd pretty nicely to last me. I could play farcry (in windows) at the highest settings but I get ram problems, and occasional slowdown. I think it'll last me for another 6 months.

God bless it ONly thing that would make my life better is a better 3D Chess game, Jose is cool but kinda buggy in 3D mode, and God aful slow (its written in java tho so what is expected?)

I really decided in honor of DOOM3 I am going to get a new GFX card... since I have a GeForce 440 MX .... hah.

The Rest of the system is nice tho, 512 MB of Ram, Athlon mobile barton clocked at 2.4 Ghz (effectively a 3600 + if one existed heh), 160 GB 8MB cache WD drive at 7200 rpm,

I just need to figure out which Gfx card is gonna offer the best Bnag for the Buck in an upgrade.... Right now I am looking at a refurbished 9800 pro w/ 128 MB of ram for 161.00 shipped. I am fine with refurbished stuff since it has a 30 day warentee... it just means you have to STRESS THE crap out of it for 30 days untill to check from problems heh.....and if it glitvches... Send her back heh

Besides a radeon 9800 pro anyone else got a suggestion as to a GFX card to get?
Just say No to ATI in linux

Anyone know if there will be a port of "Call of Duty" to linux?

(PS: WineX == crap/ripoff)

Got to be careful here I don't start a serious off topic section of the thread here:

Let's be fair

1) You know what the status of 'Game X' is with Cedega/WineX - I.E. what problems people have had with it, therefore you know what to expect
2) It's $15 at maximum. And not even that if you go for CVS which is just fine - you just can't play certain online multiplayer games because you need a NOCD crack for the CVS version - $15 for a piece of software is incredibly cheap
3) It DOES work with some games - I'm happily playing RCT at the moment.
4) It DOESN'T promise to work miracles - running Win32 on Posix is just plain wrong - WineX does a fairly good job of it.

But then of course:

1) Why does version 3.2.2 work better than 4 but not as well as 2.0.x and then only if condition y is met...ahh!
2) Paying for linux software just feels wrong
3) Most modern games don't work too well - e.g. GTA:VC, well, according to FranksCorner:

The game window will open and let it sit for a few moments. The intro movie will not play...When you get to the menu, you will probably notice that the mouse will be stuck...The clips are usually funny, but they dont play well under wine....This will be true for all other movies in the game, and they are not needed in order to complete or enjoy the game anyway. The audio is choppy throughout the game...Mainly, the radio stations will be choppy (but still understandable) and speech will probably not be understandable....When you get control of your character, you will probably notice that it looks like he has paint all over him....It runs a bit slower than on my Windows machine, but after a while, you wont notice it too much.
Personally I find would find that along the lines of unplayable.

Maybe we expect too much - until more native ports like UT come out....

You explained it perfectly SBing, but I still standby that. Ah but what can you do though... windows games-winex (or Cedega) is really the only solution, and thats why its sad; with that said though at least I have RTCW and other quake-like games (3drealms also open-sourced duke3d, a game I haven't played in a while due to XP )

(I would also like to mention I did have a subscription to transgaming for a bit.... max payne was really the only game I got to work)
