I am a huge Street Fighter 3 Alpha fan and this is the game I want to play so bad on Linux. I know that it is available via Mame and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to get Mame or a Linux version of Mame running on Linux? I would think this would not be that difficult and I am using Ubuntu 7.04 so did a search for Mame and found:
Code:
root@cwilliams:~# apt-cache search mame
advancecomp - collection of recompression utilities
kamefu - KDE All Machine Emulator Frontend for Unix - binary files
kamefu-data - Data files for Kamefu
libkamefu-dev - Development headers for Kamefu
libkamefu0 - Libraries for Kamefu
xwnc - Mix of Xvnc and XDarwin with improved protocol
kxmame - A KDE frontend for xmame emulator
xmame-common - Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
xmame-gl - dummy package
xmame-sdl - SDL binaries for the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
xmame-tools - Tools for xmame and xmess
xmame-x - X binaries for the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
xmess-common - Support files for the Multi Emulator Super System
xmess-sdl - SDL binaries for the Multi Emulator Super System
xmess-x - X binaries for the Multi Emulator Super System
I don't have KDE installed but simply Gnome and I don't like mixing any KDE libraries on my system but I will let you guys be the expect in telling me exactly what I should do as I am lost.
I managed to get it working a loooong time ago on my x86 system. I was, and still am, a Joust fan. At some point, I upgraded my video card and could never get "it" working. Now that I have upgraded my system I might try my hand at it again.
Look for Xmame, if my memory serves me correctly, as I believe that is the X11 program that wraps MAME. If it is straight X11, then it would be desktop-agnostic (meaning, not dependent upon either GNOME or KDE or any other desktop for that matter).
Good luck. Please post back what you find, as I'm curious too.

I can't find a package that is xmame alone. Do you recommend I install any specific package from the list above I found?
But many people will end up wanting at least one or two "obscure" packages. Here are a few of the packages I use which you won't find in the latest fedora core (4): ... (X)MAME, the arcade machine emulator.
Couple of thoughts, some of them probably not helpful:
Try searching their Forums for Linux. Again, you may have to compile from source.
Get familiar with the packaging system in Debian. I'm not a Debian user, I use Fedora, and AFAIK, those two distros use different packaging systems. One is not necessarily better than the other, you just have to familiarize yourself with the one your distro uses. Then, use that packaging system to search for prepackaged modules with "mame" or "xmame" in them.
I'm going to be incommunicado for a few hours as I'm in the midst of doing some dangerous admin to my main system (mounting of duplicate LVM volume group).
I've had xmame running under linux fine, the problem isn't the emulator. SF3 is only very recently supported by xmame and still, support is very shaky. You need the ROM files, the CHD files, the exact right version of xmame, some magic pixie dust to sprinkle on your mouse and a pagen god standing behind you.
Stick with the older Street Fighter games, support for the SF3 games has greatly improved recently so hang out for better support to come
