0 A.D. Development

Downloaded 0 A.D. from the Mint 20.1 repository. Currently exploring the program, no issues so far. However, it appears that the development activity on this game is "quite". One of the last activities appearing on the website is an April 2020 financial report. Seems to be a pretty good Linux version of Age of Empires.

Any thoughts concerning what is happening with this game and how much you may like it?

I find it to be a good cross between Command & Conquer and Age of Empires. The only thing I don't like is when you have enough "units" going, it can be quite sluggish (which is a known problem with it). But it's a good game all the same.

It's not dead, you can have a look at this, and you'll see it's still being maintained.

Thanks. I'll have to look into how dated the repository version is compared to the current available version. The Mint 20.1 repository version is dated March 3, 2020 (#21946P).

It likely just means that the distro developers haven't updated the package for 0ad yet. It doesn't mean the 0ad developers aren't still developing 0ad. I've had the same myself, where there was a much newer version of 0ad available on it's website, but my distro was a couple of major versions behind in it's package repo.

Located a Launchpad PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~wfg/+archive/ubuntu/0ad.
Unfortunately the last build was 112 weeks ago and apparently only gets up to Ubuntu 19.04(Disco).
Mint 20.1 based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. So it would appear that the Mint 20.1 repository may be close to having the latest version.

You'd wanna be careful about using PPA repo's. You would be better off building it from source if you can instead.

Quite true. Found a link to downloading 0A.D. on SourceForge, but the last update was: 2019-07-21. Looking for the most current version has become a "challenge of the day". Bored, I guess. Should really see how well the Mint Repository version works. may have no issues. Thanks very much for your quick replies.

Ran across this post: "0 A.D. is an interesting concept marred by its slow speed of development. It’s been over ten years and the game is still in alpha stages though it is continuously under development."

Just posted on the LinuxQuestions.org news thread: LXer: Open source RTS 0 A.D. Alpha 24 is out now with plenty of new features

Got me to this link: New Release: 0 A.D. Alpha 24: Xšayāršā

Figured out how to upgrade from Alpha-23 to the now released Alpha-24. The download, link though labeled Alpha-24, seems to reference "old" sources:
Quote:
For users of Ubuntu Cosmic (18.10) or Disco (19.04), the latest version of 0 A.D. is available in Ubuntu’s universe repository. Make sure universe is enabled in your sources, and install the package by running:
Not clear. But note the quote below. Based on that note, I went to the 0 A.D. Development Snapshots Release Alpha-24 was uploaded. Success.
Quote:
Development version: You can try a more up-to-date but less-well-tested version from our development snapshot PPA, which should be updated each week. Follow the instructions above but use the ppa:wfg/0ad.dev repository name.
