xfce4 workspace switcher only 1 workspace available.

Hi

I now have the xfce4 desktop environment running but I find that even though the number of workspaces is set to 4 in workspace switcher only 1 will show in the workspace name box.

So I cannot access more than 1 workspace.

Using cntrl - alt F1 to F6 will give me the 6 console virtual desktops.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Try setting them from the settings editor instead of from the panel widget.

Settings Editor->xfwm4->workspace_count

Also maybe try setting the names of the workspaces, silly question I know but you are using xfwm4 as the window manager right?

Sometimes the xfce panel doesn't reflect changes straight away try
Code:
xfce4-panel --restart
and see if that helps

"xfce4-panel --restart" This made no difference.

Well other than logging out then back in which you shouldn't have to do I can only think that something has gone wrong somewhere, I have been using xfce for years and never had this problem, what versions are you using? maybe rolling back to a slightly earlier release may solve your problem, I am using these versions with no problems
Code:
exo-0.10.2
garcon-0.2.1
gtk-xfce-engine-3.0.1
libwnck-2.30.7
libxfce4ui-4.10.0
libxfce4util-4.10.1
libxfcegui4-4.10.0
Thunar-1.6.3
thunar-volman-0.8.0
tumbler-0.1.29
xfce4-appfinder-4.10.1
xfce4-panel-4.10.1
xfce4-power-manager-1.2.0
xfce4-screenshooter-1.7.9
xfce4-session-4.10.1
xfce4-settings-4.10.1
xfce4-terminal-0.6.2
xfce-dev-tools-1.0
xfce-meta-4.10.1
Xfce-Theme-Manager-0.3.6
xfconf-4.10.0

You can also right-click on the switcher applet in the panel and look ate properties and settings.

Could it be you have the "wrong" applet?

Also is there room in the panel for all 4 workspace boxes? Maybe you have too many other applets on the the panel.

The packages have been built as per 'Beyond Linux® From Scratch Version 7.6' and seem to be pretty well the same as yours.

I too have used xfce4 for many years in gentoo, sabayon and mint and have never had any issues like this. I have re-built all the

xfce4 packages and the dependencies for xfwm4. I have no doubt it is something I have done wrong or missed.The question is where to

look!

Another issue I have which might be related is that startxfce4 only works as it should do as root. If I attempt this as an

ordinary user I get into the xfce4 desktop but as soon as I click on any icon it reverts to console. Xorg.0.log shows:

Code:

Anyhow thanks for your input on this so far.

Thank you.

The applet was the one that just appeared when installing xfce4 so I guess it is the right one. I only have only a very few applets at

the moment.

You definitely shouldn't have to start it as root, I do know that to get full functionality out of xfce I needed to install both sudo and console kit.

What is your .xinit rc? This is mine and works OK
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#  xinitrc.xfce - modified to work around xfce4session bug
#                 https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8841

########################################################################
## Merge in defaults and keymaps ##
########################################################################

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
    /usr/bin/xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    /usr/bin/xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f $userresources ]; then
    /usr/bin/xrdb -merge $userresources
fi

if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then
    /usr/bin/xmodmap $usermodmap
fi

########################################################################
## Start xfce Desktop Environment ##
########################################################################
if [ -z "$DESKTOP_SESSION" -a -x /usr/bin/ck-launch-session ]; then
  exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/startxfce4
else
  exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/startxfce4
fi
And I start it with startx NOT startxfce4.

I have re built consolekit built sudo and used your .xinitrc settings and started with startx. If I login in as an ordinary user I

still get the same problem of getting the xfce4 desktop initially until I click on any icon then it drops back to the console.

It looks like x is segfaulting don't know why and it seems odd that it runs fine as root, sorry maybe someone else can help, all I can suggest is rebulding xorg from scratch.

Maybe try resetting ownership of your home folder? sometimes if tha is wrong X can fail to start, try
Code:
cd ~
sudo chown $USER:$USER .

Keith

Thank for your help so far.

As you say I may have to re build xorg from scratch.

I will wait a while and hopefully someone will come up with the answer!
