A Little Review
X File Explorer (or just Xfe) is a lightweight file manager for X Windows that will remind you a lot of Thunar. I like it for my BLFS systems not only for that, but also because it is so easy to install. It requires the
FOX toolkit which also happens to be easy to install. Neither of these items are included in the BLFS book at this time (but they should be IMO).
The Xfe interface has all the usual things expected in a file manager such as various pane configurations, various ways to list, thumbnails for image files, and so on. The interface will pick up your system fonts in its preferences for customizing the font. There is a Trash Can icon to use for deleting files and folders. Items in the Trash Can can be deleted or restored. Drag and drop works as expected. One nice thing I like is the little ghost button in each pane to show hidden items without having to drop down a menu like in Nautilus or Thunar. I can't think of a single thing to criticize about this application.
How to Install Fox and Xfe
Install Fox first (not found in the BLFS book). The
current stable version is v1.6.46. That is the version I installed using the steps below. Do the usual routine of downloading, untarring, and changing to the build directory. Then...
Code:
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-release --with-xft=yes --disable-static &&
make
As root...
Install Xfe (not found in the BLFS book). The current stable version is v1.33 and is available
from sourceforge.net.
Code:
./configure --prefix=/usr &&
make
As root...
