In everyone's opinion, what is the best Host Distro to use to start your LFS system

i am planning to make lfs,i am thinking to follow lfs6.1 book,

1q)shall i use directly lfs6.1 book to lfs,there is no problem na
can any one suggest which lfs should i follow to successful making of lfs(my new)

2q)where i can get all at one place(packages) -which they mention in lfs6.1

3q)everyone saying that building of lfs would be in holepartition(we have to use)
4q) my hard disk was 75gb,in that windows xp was there as one of the primary partition ,i have 10gb logical partition(i am thinking to use this partition to/for lfs,no problem na)
5q)in lfs 6.1 book ,they mentioned that for lfs min 3gb partition is required,that is why i selected my 10gb logical partition
can any one give elaborate explanation

LFS 6.1? Why would you start learning an 'old' version of LFS? The current stable release is at 6.7. Get your latest documentation and downloads at http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/.

1. I would recommend to use the latest stble book, currently 6.7.
2. You can find a wget-list for obtaining the packages at the bottom of Chapter 3.1: Introduction. You can use to see how to use it.
3.+4.+5. 3 GB (as mentioned in the book) is the minimum to build an LFS system. If you want to add more programs to your install (you probably will, if you actually want to use that install) you should give it more space. 10 GB should be sufficient.

I also believe, like EricTRA and TobiSGD, that you should build the latest stable LFS version.

No one has seemed to answer the OP, so I will, I would suggest Slackware as a host, it comes with all dependency's and has an added bonus of being completely stock for the most part, so a LFS build should have no problems being done under Slackware.

Can anyone else recommend a host OS, instead of tell the user what version he/she should be using?

Repeated short answer: Use the LFS liveCD if at all possible. It was build to be the perfect host.

It is druuna, not druna.....

If you have a 32 bit system use the x86 version (lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2160.iso), if you have a 64 bit capable machine use the x86_64 version (lfslivecd-x86_64-6.3-r2160.iso)

These are all answered in the LFS book.

I think you should first try to install LFS as is. At a later point you can possibly add package management (look at the hints page for details).

You can't install the LFS liveCD, it is meant to be a suitabvle host.

As already stated by TobiSGD and me in your other lfs thread: I doubt if you are ready to start building an LFS system. It is, of course, up to you to do so, but you might have a very hard time when your knowledge is this basic (just warning you, you might get in way over your head).

( Linux distros are built in such a way that make it difficult to successfully build LFS using that distro as a host).

Don't expect LQ users to hold your hand. You'll learn a lot more in discovering and doing things yourself.

You need to read the documentation at hand for LFS, which might I say is very complete. If you don't have a clue on how to partition your disk for LFS, how to start a X session from a LiveCD command prompt, then might I say you'd better start with something else. Linux From Scratch teaches you a lot about Linux and how it works but it also assumes that you at least have the basics covered and know your way around a Linux environment. Most of all it assumes you are able to find, read and understand the necessary documentation, which seems to be a problem for you. A good start is the LFS site where you can Download a copy of the LFS book. Download that, start reading and learning and apply.

No, I never pointed to that link (It doesn't exist)!

You probably incorrectly used the link I posted for the packages/tar-balls (post #4). The indirect link is given in post #2, the direct link is given in post #8 (and post #3 in your other thread)!! You need to read more carefully.

Once you have the root prompt (root [ ~ ]# ), the system is up and running and you are ready to start building. Maybe you expected a graphical environment. That is also possible: the startx command will start the graphical environment.

I do hope you realize that once you finish building LFS you will _not_ have a Linux system with a graphical environment environment. LFS is nothing more than a minimal, working Linux environment. Once you finish LFS you can have a look at BLFS. BLFS, among other things, tells you how to build a graphical environment.

I think I don't understand what you are asking.....

The iso you downloaded (ver-x86-6.3-r2160.iso) is for 32 bit systems, there is also a x86_64 iso (I already mentioned this in post #8).

i did following partition my hard disk

20gb for windowsxp professinal(ntfs)(installed)-primary partition
remaining gb is extended partition

in extended partition;
-30gb for personal data(ntfs)
-15gb for ubuntu 10.04(istalled)-one logical partition(ext4 )-mounted@media
-1gb swap partition( i allocated)-one logical partition(ext4)
-10gb for i dedicated for lfs-one logical partition(ext4)-mounted @/mnt

here i followed lfsbook6.1.1-i started lfs building
i did following

mke4fs -v /dev/[lfs]-(here i used gparted to do the things-instead of using command)
mkswap -v /dev/[yyy]-( here i used ubuntu swap partition -instead of creating new swap partition for this)
export LFS=/mnt/lfs-(i gave var name)
mkdir -pv $LFS
mount -v /dev/[xxx] $LFS
mkdir -v $LFS/sources -(i created dir)
chmod -v a+wt $LFS/sources--Make this directory writable and sticky.
next step i downloaded some packages which mentioned in lfsbook6.1.1
then oneday i surf the linux from scratch.org site,there i can find that using linux destroys its difficult to success building lfs
so ,i removed ubuntu10.4 from my systemi mooved to lfs livecd for this(building lfs)
here i am little strucking,

- i am very eager to learn the things/build the lfs
