questions on GCC-3.4.3 - Pass 2 and Binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2 - Pass 2

Hi folks,

Linux From Scratch - Version 6.1.1
5.11. GCC-3.4.3 - Pass 2
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...gcc-pass2.html

On which directory shall I run;
expect -c "spawn ls"

Tried follows;

1)
lfs:/mnt/lfs/sources/gcc-build$ expect -c "spawn ls"
Code:
spawn ls
2)
lfs:/mnt/lfs/sources$ expect -c "spawn ls"
Code:
spawn ls
etc.

The response was not;
Code:
The system has no more ptys.
Ask your system administrator to create more.
Whether this section can be skipped?

Also
5.12. Binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2 - Pass 2
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...ils-pass2.html

on which directory to run the recommended commands?

BR & Merry Xmas

The book says...

Quote:

expect -c "spawn ls"

The response might be:

The system has no more ptys.
Ask your system administrator to create more.

If the above message is received, the host does not have its PTYs set up properly. In this case, there is no point in running the test suites for GCC and Binutils until this issue is resolved. Please consult the LFS FAQ at http://www.linuxfromscratch.org//lfs/faq.html#no-ptys for more information on how to get PTYs working.

I was following the book on the URL mentioned by you and came to this section. I used LFS LiveCD as host and login as
Code:
lfs~$
to build the packages. I have no idea on/under which directory to run following command;
expect -c "spawn ls"

I tried it as mentioned on my first posting and the response was only;
Code:
spawn ls
NOT getting following error message;
Code:
The system has no more ptys.
Ask your system administrator to create more.
I have no idea whether I can skip this section;
Code:
5.11. GCC-3.4.3 - Pass 2
5.11.1. Re-installation of GCC
to re-install GCC

OR I did not run the abovementioned command correctly (under the correct directory).

It doesn't matter what directory you run it under... that just checks the PTYs in the host system...it has nothing to do with the install...but it checks something with the Host System...

Hi tritong and Cirdan,

Tks for your advice.

Further about;
5.12. Binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2 - Pass 2
5.12.1. Re-installation of Binutils

on
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...ils-pass2.html

Whether this section also to be skipped. If NOT, according to the instruction there I have to run;
Code:
mkdir -v ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build
to create a separate directory. However according to;
5.3. Binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2 - Pass 1
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...ils-pass1.html

The warning there suggests;
Code:
Do not remove the Binutils build and source directories yet......
Then how can I create the abovementioned separate directory "binutils-build". It is already existing on /sources/binutils-build. Whether I also have to skip this section.

Please shed me some light OR I overlooked some instruction on the book.

TIA

In section 5.7 Ajusting the Toolchain...after you did "make -C ld install" it said you could remove them.
