Problems getting a wireless connection up - ralink usb device

I followed the instructions in LFS book 6.8 and now I can't get wlan0 up. I tried ifcfg wlan0 up and it said
Code:
phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.
Installed openssl and wpa_supplicant and tried
Code:
wpa_supplicant -D wext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
I got the same results. I downloaded the firmware from ralink's website and tried to run the .bin file and got a "cannot execute file" response. Rt2x000's legacy driver refuses to build. It says "Make - error 1". I'm presently pulling their git to see if I get lucky, but I'd love to hear success stories and instructions.

Has anyone been able to use a Ralink USB device in an LFS system? I added all the Ralink drivers to my kernel (not as modules, but compiled them to the kernel itself). Can anybody please help? It's really late now so my memory is not helping much, but I can give all the detailed output that is necessary, just tell me what you need.

Hi,

Which LFS instructions? Too my knowledge, LFS only deals with basic (wired) network setup (chapter 7.13) and not wireless networking.

BLFS has a chapter that deals with wireless devices: Wireless Tools-28 (16. Basic Networking Programs). Do read the User Notes as well!

Hope this helps.

My bad, I built the system using the instructions in the stable book. I installed openssl according to the BLFS book instructions. Thanks for the link. Silly me had missed the user notes.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to test it now because I guess that HD died on me. I had that PC since 2002 and felt so happy that I got it to boot in 15 seconds. Now the BIOS doesn't recognize the HD and there's some sort of a beep when it was supposed to be started. I'll mark the thread as solved.
