This is a known problem with glibc-2.3.2.

There are three things you can do:

1) Use Glibc-2.3.1
2) Use the LFS-CVS book which has correct instructions for building Glibc-2.3.2. The catch is that you need to restart chapter 5 from the beginning.
3) Read the FAQ at http://linuxfromscratch.org/faq/#why-not-version which has instructions how to build Glibc-2.3.2 using the LFS-4.1 book.

Yes it's not in the most logical place in the FAQ right now, simply because it's not reallly FAQ material. We're working on a different solution here (ie: moving it to a better suited place).

Did you make sure to set up a link from your /usr/src/linux-2.4.20 to /usr/src/linux? This can cause that error. Also post the part of your your config.log file that contains the error information if you can...
