../configure fails for binutils for Pass 1 with error 77

I tried running the configure command while building binutils and it seemed to fail generating this config.log.

Code:
This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.64. Invocation command line was

  $ ../configure --prefix=/tools --with-sysroot=/mnt/lfs --with-lib-path=/tools/lib --target=x86_64-lfs-linux-gnu --disable-werror

I am currently following the LFS8.1 pdf
the pdf doc dosn,t copy and paste very well, I would advise using an HTML version from the same link
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...-NOCHUNKS.html
or using the online version
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/stable/

also post the output from version check script
